MISSION
The CREEC (Community Responses to Extreme Environmental Events and Climate Change) project is an educational and community response to the growing risks associated with climate change and the intensification of extreme environmental events.
CREEC proposes a preventive and educational approach, in line with the EU's New Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change, which highlights the essential role of education in building resilient communities. The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly frequent and visible, manifesting themselves through floods, fires, extreme heat waves, episodes of intense cold and prolonged droughts. These phenomena affect not only the environment, but also the security, economy, food sovereignty, health and well-being of populations. The main objective of the project is to empower schools, teachers and students in Portugal, Spain and Greece by providing them with knowledge and tools to deal with extreme weather events and integrate adaptation strategies into the school context.
CREEC is committed to developing climate literacy, encouraging critical thinking and school preparedness through an innovative approach. Planned initiatives include the production of awareness-raising content, online and face-to-face training, the development of school emergency plans, the conduct of drills and direct contact with experts and policy makers. These activities promote a culture of prevention and safety, involving the entire educational community in creating solutions tailored to their local needs and contexts.
Although environmental education is already part of school curricula, specific preparation for dealing with the effects of rural fires, floods or extreme temperatures — and for understanding their direct relationship with climate change — remains limited. CREEC aims to fill this gap by equipping students and teachers not only with theoretical knowledge, but also with practical tools to act in emergency situations, strengthening a culture of prevention, safety and resilience in schools and local communities.
